Net-Metering/Net Billing
A pivotal initiative designed to facilitate the integration of Distributed Renewable (Solar) Energy Systems into the national electrical grid.
- Net-Metering (applicable for residential solar energy systems with a capacity of up to 100 kW) allows customers to generate electricity from solar energy in their homes and carry forward surplus electricity exported to the national electricity grid for subsequent months.
- Net-Billing (applicable for solar energy systems in all non-residential sectors and in residential properties with a capacity exceeding 100 kW) allows customers to generate electricity from solar energy to meet their energy needs and sell to the Authority surplus electricity exported to the national electricity grid, in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations.
Renewable Goals and Achievements
Expanding Access to Renewable Energy
The Authority’s achievements in the field of renewable energy include the operation of more than 140 MW of generated electricity, with continued efforts to increase capacity and achieve national renewable energy targets and energy efficiency plans.
EWA supports the Kingdom of Bahrain’s national renewable energy goals by facilitating distributed renewable energy generation through the Net Metering/Net Billing. The Authority is committed to expanding this programme across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, in line with Bahrain's National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP) and the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (NEEAP).
To date, 340 projects have been completed, and 69 projects are ongoing, with a total estimated capacity of 500 MW.
Why Solar Energy?
Transitioning to solar energy offers numerous advantages, including:
Low Electricity Bill
Harnessing the sun's power can lead to significant savings on electricity costs.
Environmental Impact
Solar energy reduces reilance on fossil fuels, contributing to a cleaner environment.
Energy Freedom
Solar energy provides a sustainable and independent power source, granting you greater control over your energy needs.
