Using solar energy to operate water transmission and distribution stations in EWA

His Excellency the Minister of EWA , Eng. Wael bin Nasser Al-Mubarak, and His Excellency Sheikh Nawwaf bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, CEO of EWA , visited Al-Seef Water Transfer and Distribution Station to view the facilities of this model station, which was designed to use solar energy to generate electricity to operate the station equipment.

This station is considered the first of the Electricity and Water Authority stations to be supplied with clean electrical energy produced from solar panels installed on the facades and roofs of the buildings of this station, which contains 1316 solar cells that produce about 407 kilowatts of clean electrical energy that covers the needs of the station and exports The surplus electrical energy to the electricity distribution network, as solar cells were installed on the roofs of water tanks to generate the highest amount of clean electrical energy. The advanced computer programs in this field have been used to create a simulation model in which the locations of the solar panels and the vertical and horizontal angles are determined to achieve the optimum result.

During the visit, the minister confirmed that the Electricity and Water Authority is keen to make use of renewable energy in its projects, including transmission and distribution stations, while applying the best technologies and practices used in this field, out of its efforts to raise the level of services provided to citizens and residents, explaining that the Authority continues to expand the use of this type of Energy in a number of its upcoming projects.

His Excellency the CEO also stated that the Electricity and Water Authority continues to popularize the experience of using solar energy in operating water pumping and distribution stations, in order to raise the efficiency of operation and produce clean electrical energy, and to contribute to exporting the surplus to the electricity distribution network. It has already started implementing this strategy in other stations such as Juffair and Nabih Saleh water distribution stations, while it will be applied to all future stations.

Supplying this station with solar energy comes as part of the Electricity and Water Authority’s contribution to achieving the national goals of renewable energy, in light of the directives and concerns of the wise leadership headed by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and his wise government led by His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister Distinguished, with the support and support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince Secretary and First Deputy Prime Minister, to meet the growing demand for energy use for development, urban, industrial and commercial expansion, and work to attract foreign investments to the Kingdom that are in line with the Kingdom of Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 .
